Although the app has been active for a while, I’ve not announced it officially yet. The app works quite well and I’d love to have my other app users check it out.

The XtremelySocial app lets you view your news stream and friend’s walls “the old way” as opposed to the new “timeline” view. Posts are shown in a single column sorted from newest to oldest. You can filter by type of post, such as just showing status updates or photo posts. You can even update your status and post on your friend’s walls.

The app of course runs on Facebook, but it also even runs right here on our website!

I have finally rolled out a new fully-responsive website theme that is optimized for both desktop and mobile browsing. The new site automatically reformats itself based on the width of the browser or mobile device. So it should look great whether you are accessing it with an iPhone, iPad, Android, or Windows Mobile device.

The full site content is available now on mobile devices. Previously, the full-width site would display on the iPad and a special “smartphone” theme was used for phones. That smartphone theme didn’t look similar to the full website and didn’t display all the content of the site. So the site now provides a much better experience for mobile devices, while still being optimized for desktop and laptop browsers as well.

I also wanted to provide a more modern look to the site. Sites these days are not only fully responsive, but provide a cleaner, simpler look with more “whitespace” between the various pieces of content. If you look at our home page, for example, you’ll see how its still graphically rich but a much cleaner look.

For now, I have left the top navigation, right sidebar content, and footers essentially the same as the old site. This was done intentionally so users wouldn’t be so completely disoriented by the new site design. However, over time I will be the footers and perhaps eliminating the right sidebars altogether and using the extra space to format the page content itself in two columns.

Please feel free to let us know how you like the new site. Please note that the Facebook Friends and Facebook News Stream pages are driven by our XtremelySocial app on Facebook and it hasn’t yet been optimized for mobile. However, if you run into any formatting issues with anything else on the site, please let us know.

Facebook recently killed off all of the API’s and methods that My Greetings was originally written with. This means the application no longer works and the amount of time to rewrite it would be exorbitant. We’re sad to see it go as well!

My Greetings was the first Facebook application that I wrote and the reason that I wrote it was because all of the other greetings-style apps simply generated SPAM with “requests” send to your friends and the apps were jam packed with advertising. They also required to you slowly “unlock” greetings by sending more and more of them.

At the time, Facebook’s app platform was based on what they called FBML (Facebook Markup Language). They had all sorts of Facebook-specific commands that let you fairly easily put together an app. They weren’t supposed to official kill off FBML apps until June 1, 2012, but they have already abandoned so many of the FBML commands that apps written using them no longer work.

Facebook is now pushing javascript-based “iframe” applications and the new “open graph” API’s. I have rewritten all of our other applications using these methods, but it has taken a massive amount of time. I can see why they are going in this direction because javascript is a much more widely adopted language for web-based apps. However, there are many things that used to be very simple in FBML that now require a ton of programming or aren’t even possible at all.

I still like the idea of a simple greetings application for Facebook and may consider adding greetings to one of my other apps, such as My Status or the newer XtremelySocial app. Those apps both let you update your status and post on your friend’s walls, but they are text-based only for now.

Here’s one fine example. Be sure to share with us what you’ve done with your pages!

Sweet Chalet

I wanted to highlight the Facebook Page from one of our users. Its simple, but elegant and I thought it would be great to share just one idea about what our users have done with the app.

Sweet Chalet is out of Toronto, Ontario and sells cakes and other sweets. You can visit the Sweet Chalet Facebook Page to check them out.

Again, if you have an interesting Facebook Page that uses one of the My Info family of custom page tab apps, please share it with us!

We’ve recently added back displaying likes and comments on your Facebook Places checkin history in the My Places app. Now you can see your friend’s reactions to your checkins.

For performance reasons, we are only displaying the first two to three likes and comments, just like Facebook does on their own pages. If you click “View All” then you will be taken to a full Facebook page for that status update that shows you all of the comments.

Please note that we have not yet added back the ability to post new comments, but we are working on that as well as allowing you to like a checkin or comment.

We’ve recently began displaying likes and comments on your Facebook status history in the My Status app. Now you can see your friend’s reactions to your status updates as far back as Facebook will allow.

For performance reasons, we are only displaying the first two to three likes and comments, just like Facebook does on their own pages. If you click “View All” then you will be taken to a full Facebook page for that status update that shows you all of the comments.

Please note that Facebook only exposes your past status history to a certain point. It is a function of both the number of status updates as well as how long ago they were. Users that post a high volume of status updates won’t be able to go as far back in time as users with less status updates. Unfortunately, this is a limit of Facebook and there is nothing we can do about it.

Google Plus got a few more fun features today in addition to workplace ones. There’s a new feature called What’s Hot that surfaces popular posts (don’t call them “trending”), and a very cool visualization tool called Ripples that lets you watch Plus conversations flow out across the network. These are neat ways to track social activity that Facebook and Twitter don’t offer.

Google Plus is very proud of its photo features, especially the instant uploads from Android phones, and today’s Plus update also adds new photo editing tools called Creative Kit. It has basic editing tools as well as filters like everybody has these days.

Sponsor

What’s Hot On Google Plus

What’s Hot appears underneath new posts inside the main stream as well as in the Sparks area on the left sidebar. It’s a new way to discover content on Plus that makes a nice algorithmic complement to the right-now real-time search tool. Discovery on Plus is now nicely positioned between the ways Facebook and Twitter work.

Ripples: Watch Sharing Happen

Ripples is a sexy feature that lets you visually follow the flow of a conversation. It even incorporates some analytics. That’s much more data than other social networks give casual users about their posts. Very Google-y. Visual representations of data are catching on at the Googleplex. The Google Analytics team also recently introduced a flow visualization tool.

Creative Kit for Photos

Google touts 3.4 billion photo uploads as its favorite metric of the success of Plus. When Android users (who have turned on Google Plus) take a photo, it uploads automatically, so that’s sort of cheating. The photos are kept private until a user decides to share them on Plus, which then makes them visible instantly. If Google talked about how many photos were shared, then we’d have a real sense.

Today’s update gives Plus users some tools to spruce up their photos, which may increase sharing as users get more excited about photos. Trendy filters and Halloween gimmicks aside, Plus users can do much more with photos now.

The editing tools are desktop-only for now, but I’d put money on them coming to mobile apps soon.

What do you think of these new Google Plus features?

The following is an excerpt of an entry in our Facebook Marketing Bible. The full version contains walk-throughs and strategies for posting links to your Page on other Pages, creating Events as a Page, and finding content to post to your fans through a news feed of Pages that your Page Likes.

When Facebook redesigned Pages in February 2011 one of the features it implemented was the ability for administrators to use Facebook ‘as’ their Page (as opposed to as a user), providing access to additional tools and allowing admins to interact and engage in and around Facebook as their brand. Here we’ll walk-through how to “Use Facebook as Page” to gain exposure for your Page and increase your Like count.

The benefits of doing this include:

Easy access to Page metrics, including new fans, activity, Likes and comments

Personalized Page News Feed

Page Events

Engagement with other Pages, raising brand awareness around Facebook and driving visitors and new Likes

Using Facebook as Your Page

To use Facebook as your Page, login as normal and click the drop-down arrow on the far right side of the top navigation bar and select “Use Facebook as Page”. Then select which of the Pages you admin to browse as.

Alternatively, visit your Page, then click on the ‘Use Facebook as [Page name]’ link at the top of the right sidebar’s admin menu. The screen will refresh and you will now be using Facebook as your Page.

To revert back to using Facebook as your user profile, select “Switch back to [your name] link in the top navigation drop-down, or click on the now-changed “Use Facebook as [your name]“link at the top of your Page’s right sidebar.

Page Likes and Notifications

There are subtle but important changes to the way the site works when you are using Facebook as your Page. The Likes and Notifications buttons on the top left of the Page now display data for the Page itself (as opposed to the user’s profile) — click on either of these to display more information.

If you visit Facebook’s Notifications section whilst using Facebook as your Page you will see all of the notifications for that Page, which can be convenient as an overview of activity over the past week.

Friend requests is replaced with a count of new Likes of your Page. Notifications is replaced with a list of mentions, shares, wall posts, post comments and user activity on or related to your page. This can be a great way of keeping track of influencers that are interacting with or sharing your Page’s content.

Note that there is no way to access Messages while using Facebook as a Page as Pages cannot currently send private messages to users. Similarly, while Pages can visit the profiles of users, they cannot post on their walls or comment on their posts, but can reshare their posts.

Access walk-throughs and strategies for how to “Use Facebook as Page” to engage with other Pages and distribute links to your Page in the full version of this article, available in the Facebook Marketing Bible, Inside Network’s comprehensive guide to how all of Facebook’s features can be employed for marketing.

Now we have five different tools that create Facebook timeline cover images, all of them appearing to be reformatted banners, screensavers or Twitter backgrounds.

Even if they are all recycled, it’s still pretty cool considering only one week has elapsed since Facebook made the new timeline profile available to those who have the Developer application installed on their profiles.

We’ve previously covered three such tools: Coverize.me, Facebook Timeline Cover Creator and Facebook Covers. Today we discovered two more of them.

Fresh Facebook Covers has different 211 images, grouped into the following categories: popular, for girls, for boys, celebrities, TV shows, music, quotes, cute and random.

Like the other tools in this space, all of these covers have Fresh Facebook Covers’ web address stamped in the lower right-hand corner – do you want that in your profile?

On Fresh Facebook Covers, the button “download this cover” appearing beneath all of the images makes it look like you’ll automatically capture the image, but clicking on it simply opens up a larger version of the graphic a new tab. You have to save it yourself and then upload it on your own to your timeline.

Meanwhile, FacebookCovers.org contains 50 cover images and lists 16 categories, some of which don’t yet have anything in them.

These groups are labeled: abstract, animals, awareness, awesome, cute, funny, hearts, life, love, movies, music, people, quotes, sports, TV shows and video games.

To the right of each image on FacebookCovers.org there’s a button labeled “add to profile.”

Clicking on the link fires up a permission window asking your permission for access to your profile, but all that does is upload the chosen graphic to your photo albums. You still have to click on “change cover.”

Also, like the others we’ve covered (pun intended if you want), all of the images available on FacebookCovers.org bear the site’s brand name in the lower-right-hand corner.

It’s easy to erase that branding in any graphics editor, although it would be impolite of us to recommend that practice.

So, dear readers, have you tried out any of the applications for tricking out your cover image in Facebook’s timeline?

When Facebook unveiled Timeline last week, many users were struck by the idea of humanizing your profile by summarizing your life and connections.

But what if you’re not a human at all?

SEE ALSO: How Facebook Timeline Might Radically Change the Look of Brand Pages [PICS]

Timeline may have a similar effect on brands as well. In fact, the brand benefits of Timeline could be huge, and will let companies tell a more engaging and authentic story. This is one reason (beyond the 800 million active users) that brands should be celebrating the new changes to Facebook even if the network hasn’t yet confirmed that brand pages will employ Timeline. Here are a few more reasons we hope they do.

The Israeli digital ad agency experiments with its own Facebook look.

According to Dr. John Medina’s book Brain Rules, vision is our most powerful sense, and “we learn and remember best through pictures, not through written or spoken words.” This helps explain the popularity of infographics, photo apps like Instagram and visual blog platforms like Tumblr. We increasingly consume information through photos, from browsing friends’ Facebook albums to mobile Twitpics. Accordingly, Facebook has made photos a main focus of the new Timeline profile.

Compared to the current Facebook brand page (which only allows the profile picture and five thumbnails to be customized, hiding photo albums and tagged photos beneath the Wall), Timeline unlocks new possibilities for branding, raising awareness and creativity. The “Cover,” an 849 by 312 pixel image spanning the top of your profile, can be changed at any time and is major real estate for a brand – perfect for a product shot or promotion push. In addition, brands could call out important photos on the Timeline by clicking a star on the post that expands the photo to widescreen.

Brands Can Be More Interesting

Currently, the hidden “Info” tab on the Facebook brand page serves as a dumping ground for every bit of information about a brand in a boring text format. When deciding whether to drive paid media to Facebook or a brand site, brands face the challenge of choosing between growing their Facebook community or providing a more informative and better user experience elsewhere. Now, the decision tips a bit more in Facebook’s favor as Timeline makes it easier for people to find information by pushing the Info section, photos, apps and map to the top of the page in a clear navigation bar.

While conversations on Facebook still matter, information and content have become more prominent in the Timeline design. The infinite scroll prolongs the lifespan of brand content, giving people more to engage and consume, which will lead to more chatter, and focuses more on quality of posts over quantity, since posts don’t disappear “below the fold” of the Facebook wall.

With the focus shifting from building conversation to sharing content, the purpose of a Facebook brand page will be less about selling and more about telling an authentic story. Brands can express what makes them unique and build an emotional connection with fans through behind-the-scenes photos, blooper videos, real-time mobile pictures, sound clips and exclusive news. In addition to expressing the brand in the present, a brand can utilize the Timeline to speak to its past to reignite nostalgia and sentiment that may be associated with it.

It Simplifies What It Means to Be on Facebook

The focus on telling a brand story lowers the barriers to entry for brands on Facebook, especially small businesses like a car repair shop, florist or restaurant that don’t have the budget or content to sustain a community. Prior to Timeline, brands often felt confused as to how Facebook fit into their brand strategy and felt the need to have a gimmicky app or sampling incentive for people to “Like” or engage with their page. According to ExactTarget, of the people who “Like” Facebook brand pages, 40% are doing that to receive discounts and promotions. Now with the larger post size and photos, Timeline can easily serve as a brand blog, providing fans with frequent and engaging updates in a neatly packaged profile.

The same challenges of building a brand hub and bringing the brand to life on Facebook still exist, but the design of Timeline will make content creation easier by providing a skeleton for brands to fill in.

It’s a Great Move for Facebook

Two months ago, I suggested that Google+ brand pages could be better than Facebook’s. At the time, I could only focus on what Facebook had done wrong for brand pages – poor user experience, few branding opportunities and limited analytics. With the launch of the Timeline, I am happy to say that Facebook has done something right.

Brands, especially small businesses, may forgo creating a blog or unique domain page, opting to use Facebook Timeline instead due to the massive number of active Facebook users and the simplicity of setting up a page. All I ask of Facebook now is for more robust analytics, especially adding a “time spent” metric that can be drilled down by demographic and location so brands can better measure and analyze engagement. After all, it is called Timeline.

This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of Mashable as a publication.

The New Facebook Profile: Timeline

Timeline is a radical departure from previous versions of the Facebook user profile. The most prominent feature is the addition of a cover photo at the top of the page. Users can change this to whatever they’d like it to be.

1987

In 1987, my sister was born. Facebook knows these life events and includes them in your timeline.

Being Born

You can even add a picture and context to your birth, which starts the Timeline.

Timeline Interface

The Timeline is a two-column interface with top photos, status updates, friends and more.

Map

Facebook has added a feature that lets you see where you have visited. This is powered by Facebook Places.

Photos in the Timeline

You can add life events, such as getting married, to your profile through the Publisher Bar. You can also announce that you broke a bone, got a new job, etc.

One of the most intriguing of this year’s Web battles is between Facebook and Google Plus, as the two products vie for social networking supremacy. Yesterday we explored the ramifications of Facebook’s new Subscribe button, which partly aims to match Google Plus on public sharing. Today we turn out attention to another new feature that Facebook launched this week: improved friend lists. It's a direct response to the "Circles" feature of Google Plus, which enables you to put your friends into lists. The new Facebook lists are definitely an improvement; and Facebook even gets one over Plus. Facebook has managed to automate some of the process of creating lists, whereas creating and populating Circles requires manual labor in Google Plus.

To make the most of Facebook’s improved lists, we bring you this guide and analysis.

Sponsor

Friend Lists: Facebook Finally Gets Its Act Together

In its announcement post for the new lists, Facebook disingenuously states that "you've told us how time-consuming it is to organize lists for different parts of your life and keep them up to date."

In fact, it wasn’t just time-consuming to manage Facebook lists – it was a challenge to even find this feature, let alone use it. Lists in Facebook had been buried in illogical navigation and a confusing design.

It’s more likely that Facebook saw that people really liked Google Plus Circles (which are basically lists of friends) and recognized that it needed to vastly improve its own lists feature.

To its credit though, Facebook also recognized that there is a large flaw in Circles. Which is that they are a pain to manually create and maintain. To be honest, I gave up maintaining my Circles after the first week or so.

Smart Lists

So Facebook came up with the idea of automated friends lists, which is what the new "Smart Lists" are. To get started, go to your Facebook homepage and click the "Lists" link in the left-hand menu.

There are 4 types of smart lists right now:

Work

School

Family

City

Facebook creates these lists based on your profile information, for example where you live.

The donkey work of creating the smart lists is done for you, but you can also manually curate them.

The default lists aren’t perfect. For example Facebook gave me two work lists, both named ReadWriteWeb. It turns out that this is due to Facebook’s messy transition to Pages for brands. One of my work lists is comprised of our staff who list the old page as their employer, the other list is made up of staff who link to the newer (and up-to-date) ReadWriteWeb Page.

So there’s room for improvement, but still it’s great that Facebook creates some default lists and makes a decent attempt at populating them. +1 over Google Plus, which leaves all of the list making work up to its users.

Close Friends & Acquaintances

These two lists are template lists that you need to fill in (or merge old lists into the new ones). However there is a neat automation aspect to them, which is that your news feed will show more from those on your "Close Friends" list than from people in your "Acquaintances" list.

What About Your Existing Lists?

If you’d somehow managed to navigate the previous design and created Facebook lists, those are still available. Facebook offers the option to merge any old lists that match the new options.

It just so happens I already had a work list called "Team RWW," so I merged that with the new "ReadWriteWeb" list.

Selected Sharing

This is where Facebook most wants to emulate Google Plus, by enabling selected sharing of updates to certain lists.

You had the option to do this even before the new lists were launched, by using the ‘Custom’ link. But that process wasn’t well designed and I suspect that most people were oblivious to it (I admit that I was, until very recently).

Now the list names are prominently displayed in the status update field, as per the screenshot below, so it’s much easier to utilize selected sharing.

Note that you can still use the ‘Custom’ option to include more than one list in your update.

Google Plus has been a big influence on social networking this year, by emphasizing privacy, selected sharing and public updates. Facebook has now countered those initiatives by introducing the new lists (for better privacy and selected sharing) and the Subscribe button (for public sharing, amongst other things).

Although the new Facebook lists are far from perfect, they are a vast improvement over the previous lists. They make it much easier to both view and post to select groups of people, which is something I’ve wanted for some time now. Thanks Google Plus for pushing these features into the social networking landscape; and thanks Facebook for finally implementing them.

Will you be using the new lists?

Facebook is taking this week to launch several platform “improvements” that it has been testing with a select groups of users in the last month. Today, Facebook announced a “subscribe button” that will allow users to filter stories that you want to see in the news feed.

This feature has been rumored to be in the works for a couple of weeks. We wrote about it at the end of August when several users saw it being tested with their accounts. Yet, the subscribe button goes beyond just relevance in the news feed. It fundamentally changes Facbook’s original social contract.

Sponsor

Facebook evolved around the notion of “balanced following.” You couldn’t be friends with me unless I was a friend to you. At the start, Facebook held tight to that rule. As time went on, that started to evolve and erode where you could see updates of people you had sent a request to even if they had not yet responded. Later, Facebook instituted sharing options where “friends of friends” and such could see your posts if you so chose. We wrote about the Facebook filters in 2010.

The subscribe button changes that.

Here are the three main points Facebook wants you to know about the subscribe button:

Choose what you see from people in the news feed

Hear from people, even if you’re not friends

Let people hear from you, even if you’re not friends

How does that adhere in anyway to the balanced follow that Facebook was built on? Really, Facebook is now taking the fundamental nature of “friending” and changing it. On one hand, it brings it much closer to how Twitter and Google Plus work. On the other, it is a distinct departure from how the site was founded.

You can filter the updates you see as well. There are choices between “all updates,” “most updates” or “important updates only.” You can see just photos from a friend, or life events or games they are playing (or a mixture of all those).

Users can add subscribe buttons to their own page if they see fit to do so. For instance, I am a reporter and all my posts go to Facebook (and Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus). Some people may want to subscribe to my Facebook feed to keep up with technology or sports news. If I set my updates as “public” then they will see those posts. You can then filter the types of posts you see from that person. It is not clear how granular the filters will be, but it would be an interesting feature if you could see just mobile stories from me and cut out whenever I write about security, for instance.

What is going to be user feedback to the subscribe button? Is it a betrayal of what Facebook was built on or a necessary feature to keep the news feed relevant and competitive against the likes of Google Plus and Twitter?

Google Plus Photo Importer ($0.99) by Dropico is a fast and easy way to get your photos from other social networks into Google+.

Google+ is the latest social networking foray from Google, and for the most part, it’s actually pretty decent. However, you have photos from all over the web, and there isn’t a very simple way to import your photos besides using Picasa. That is, until now.

Google Plus Photo Importer is currently the easiest way to get your photos from Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and Photobucket and dump them into your Google+ profile.

Once you log in via your Google Account, you will be able to choose which services you want to import photos from. The available options are Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and Photobucket. While the options may be limited, it is highly likely this is where your photos are stored anyway. Perhaps in the future, the developers can look into adding more services, like SmugMug, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.

When you log in to your other accounts, you’ll be able to view your albums. Just tap on the album you’d like to view and then you will be able to see all of the photos. A button at the top will allow you to Select All (or None if you change your mind), or you can manually select each photo individually. Once the images are picked, just hit the Import button at the bottom. You can choose the Google+ album you want your photos to go in, or just create a new album.

Once you go through with an import, you’ll see two figures at the bottom, which represent the service that you’re importing from and Google+. These serve as the progress bar, as they toss photos to Google+. The thumbnail will change to represent which image is currently being imported. It serves as a real-time update on what is being sent to Google.

If you have a lot of images to import, then it may take a few moments. Luckily, you can exit the app and have images be imported in the background. Even then, the app is reasonably fast when importing — importing about 100 photos will only take a few seconds, thanks to cloud-to-cloud technology.

If you’re a person that is a frequent user of Google+ and want all of your photos there with you, then this is the best tool for the job. However, you must be using at least one of the four services included, which can be a drag. Hopefully the developers can add more services in the future.

Google+ users who would like to have their photos imported to the new social network should definitely invest their dollar in this simple, yet effective, app.

Facebook will remove the Places check-in feed from its mobile apps and interface, a company spokesperson confirms with us. Rather than check-in, users will be able to add their city-level location or tag a specific Place in any post.

The change will come as part of the rollout of the new privacy and location sharing features announced today. Without the dedicated check-in feed, it may be more difficult for users to determine the current location of friends. However, Foursquare and other locations services built around a check-in feed should be pleased about the news of Facebook using location as a layer rather than as content itself.

Facebook launched Places a year ago, allowing users to check in to locations they were within three city blocks of and view a feed of check-ins of friends via m.facebook.com and the native smartphone apps. In April, Facebook added a map view to the iPhone app’s check-in feed to make it easier to tell if friends were nearby.

Some users, especially those in dense urban areas with lots of active Facebook friends, found these features very helpful for finding things to do in real-time. The check-in feed was never brought to the web interface, though, so users without smartphone access had to sift the location of friends out of the entire news feed.

Soon this may be the fate of smartphone users as well, as a Facebook spokesperson tells us “We’ve learned a lot since launching Places. The core insight is that most people on Facebook think about location as part of their everyday experience. The Places check in feed on the mobile app will go away and now a “place” becomes another descriptor to add to any post.”

When users post content from the web, mobile site, or smartphone apps, they’ll have the option to tag a Place, whether they’re there currently or just want to mention it. As TechCrunch illustrates, Facebook’s foot-traffic incentivizing Check-in Deals will still be available, with users seeing the option to redeem them appended to the news feed story of their mention of a location.

Unless Facebook adds a filter to the news feed that only shows posts tagged with specific locations, the change will likely make it harder to find exactly where friends are currently are and meet up with them. Even if Facebook did add a location filter, it wouldn’t be able to tell if a friend had tagged a Place because they were planning to go their in future, had been there in the past, just wanted to discuss it, or are actually there. This may also prevent Facebook from sending helpful push notifications about one’s closest friends checking in nearby.

This could drive users looking to keep track of the current locations of friends to Foursquare, Google Latitude, Gowalla, or other location services. While perhaps valuable to a smaller audience than location as a layer, these services will continue helping users find their friends in real-time.

Making location a component of status updates, photos, and other content will surely give users more context to what their friends are sharing. Those who currently enjoy checking in will probably just post status updates, tag their current location and friends who are with them, and add a description such as “Here at…”. It will also help users plan future meetups by allowing them to tag locations and say they’ll be there in an hour.

Still, it seems unnecessary to remove the check-in feed and the ability to populate that feed by explicitly informing Facebook of one’s current location. The mobile interfaces could keep the feed and use the existing check-in button to indicate real-time location rather than just a mention of a Place.

Instead, Facebook is removing functionality some have grown to enjoy, and ignoring the fact that sometimes location is valuable in its own right, not just as a layer.

Search makes up 34% of all external referral traffic to Facebook Pages, with Google 27.5% coming from Google, according to a six month study of 1,000 Pages by analytics provider PageLever. This means Facebook Page admins should be concerned with search engine optimization when naming Pages, filling in fields on the Info tab, posting content, and placing links to their Pages on websites.

The study also shows a high variance in how much traffic is sourced from search, indicating some Pages do much better at SEO than others and that there is a high potential for gain if Pages execute a smart SEO strategy.

Through its APIs, Facebook shares data about internal and external referral traffic of Pages with their admins. PageLever used data on 1,000 Pages with more than 10,000 fans between January 1st and June 30th, 2011 to conduct the study.

Internal sources include links in the news feed, profiles, as well as Facebook’s internal search engine which has shown to account for the bulk of internal traffic sent to Pages. Overall, external referral traffic only accounts for an average of 27.8% of total traffic to Pages, and those with over a million fans see closer to 8% of their traffic come from outside Facebook.com. In addition to search, external referral traffic is sourced from official websites for businesses, blogs, and other social networks such as Twitter.

Still, the amount of external traffic coming from search is enough to make it worthwhile for Page admins to consider SEO. Optimizing for Google PageRank should be their priority as the other top search engines contribute much less traffic, with Yahoo delivering 4.1% and Bing delivering 2.3 of total external referral traffic.

While trying to court Google PageRank, admins should consider whether they have the best possible name and URL for their Page. They should look to publish links to their website frequently, and have their website reciprocate by posting links to the Page wherever appropriate.

Pages should employ these basic SEO strategies to make sure anyone trying to them from outside of Facebook.com can do so without having to wade through other search results. By combining SEO efforts with compelling default landing tabs that encourage visitors to Like them, Pages can convert this search traffic into additional fans.

A closer look at key Facebook Page search engine optimization strategies can be found in the Facebook Marketing Bible, Inside Network’s comprehensive guide to marketing and advertising through Facebook.

Photoshop and Facebook page creation are becoming more intertwined: Hike has released a free Photoshop template for Facebook pages, joining fellow German company 247Grad’s Facebook Page GUI, which was introduced earlier this month.

Hike’s template is vector-based, with individual elements set in the exact pixel locations that they occupy on Facebook pages.

Only the icons are not incorporated in the form of vectors.

The layers in the Photoshop documents are named in a manner that speeds the incorporation process.

The template can be viewed in four different ways:

Wall displays the Facebook page white board with text items.

Wireframe wall has the details replaced by placeholders.

Custom tab is a base with items represented by text.

Custom tab wireframe, much like the other wireframe option, replaces text components with placeholders.

The use of Photoshop to create Facebook pages seems like it would make things simpler for designers and photographers to create professional presences on the social network.

Readers, have any of you attempted to build a Facebook page via Photoshop?

Facebook, the biggest online social network, is taking on the Whatsapp’s and iMessages of the App Store world, with a standalone messaging app of its own. Called Facebook Messenger, and launched a few minutes ago, it brings Facebook chat, and recently improved messaging features as a standalone app to your iPhone.

All Facebook messages will be accessible from within the app, allowing users to send and receive their messages. Facebook Messenger will also allow users to message several people at once and send pictures with location information and details. It also includes push notifications so you won’t miss any of your Facebook messages.

Facebook Messenger – Accessing all your contacts

Peter Deng, a Facebook product manager said:

“It’s just that the separate app has a few extra features. All your messages will still be in one place. Your conversation between you and your friends is now accessible anywhere you go.”

The technology behind Facebook Messenger was derived from Beluga, a group messaging app, which Facebook acquired back in March and is still available on the App Store. Facebook Messenger is designed to rival other messaging apps, such as BlackBerry Messenger and Apple’s own upcoming iMessage.

Initially, Facebook messenger will only be available for users in the U.S. and Canada, and only for those who own an iPhone or an Android device. Facebook plans to roll the app out to other markets in the coming weeks.

Since we launched Publicize for Facebook, which automatically shares a link to new posts to your Facebook account, one of the top requested features has been the ability to Publicize to Facebook Pages. We’ve been listening and working hard, and are happy to announce support for this today.

If you already have Publicize active (which you should if you like traffic), you’ll now see a link to set options for Facebook, inside the Facebook block on the Sharing Settings page.

If you click on it, you’ll see a simple dialog box that lists all your available pages to pick from.

If you are new to Publicize, you’ll see a sequence of screens confirming permission to post to your Facebook account, before you see the screens above.

Also note, currently you can only Publicize to one target: either a page or your wall. This should be more than sufficient to get your great posts out to a wide audience of your choosing.

We hope you enjoy this added flexibility in how your blog posts get shared to Facebook.

Converting Facebook’s 750 million active users to Google+ will be a long, difficult battle for the search giant. But converting brands to Google+ will be much easier if Google+ is able to solve advertisers’ biggest problems with Facebook – such as post-click engagement tracking, paid search inefficiencies and limited customization.

Advertisers drive paid media to their Facebook Pages because they want to be where their audience is, but there’s a major flaw in this strategy. Advertisers can’t track post-click engagement of non-Facebook ads driving to Facebook, and that’s a huge disadvantage in qualifying traffic and uncovering valuable user insights. Without such information, we can only guess whether media dollars are being well spent.

In a month or two, Google+ will launch its highly anticipated brand pages. Here are four reasons why marketers are right to be excited and why Google+ brand pages will provide a better branded experience than Facebook.

1. Better Search Opportunites

A major challenge with driving paid search ads to a Facebook page is that the Facebook.com domain generates a lower click-through rate (CTR), most likely due to people finding the domain irrelevant to their query. The low CTR makes for a low quality score in Google’s auction-model, which typically increases cost per click for paid search ads driving to Facebook versus a unique brand domain. The loss in cost efficiency of driving to a Facebook page has been an ongoing struggle for advertisers, particularly on Google, which has over 60% of the search market.

It would be crazy for search giant Google not to have search benefits for Google+ brand pages, whether it is a “certified check mark” callout (like on Twitter), a colored box around the listing, or possibly page-rank priority. Search benefits would likely be the strongest reason for brands to adopt a Google+ brand page. The only flaw in this theory is that giving brand pages’ extra benefits in search could raise the specter of anti-trust action and legal challenges.

2. More Customization

Facebook ad types are limited to just ads, sometimes with a video or poll, allowing for few branding or creative opportunities. Looking at the design of Google+ personal pages, I predict the two skyscraper-sized white spaces on each side of the profile will be opportunities for custom skinning of your brand page and for display or rich media ads.

Google+ users are probably cursing me for suggesting the placement of ads on the currently clean design of Google+, but I am speaking specifically about allowing brands to advertise and skin their own pages as seen on branded YouTube channels such as Old Spice and Miracle Whip. These are great examples of how Google+ brand pages can deliver stronger brand experiences and help brands raise awareness of special promotions, as well as letting them drive qualified traffic to pages outside of Google+.

I would not be surprised if advertising opportunities were immediately available after the launch of Google+ brand pages, since Google is fully prepared to support it with its Google Display Network, AdWords and DoubleClick advertising products.

3. Better Analytics

People who have used Google Analytics know how detailed the data is, including metrics like time spent on page, top content, referring sites and geographic information. It seems inevitable for Google to integrate Google Analytics into Google+ brand pages, so that brands can gain valuable insights into who their fans are, what content their fans are consuming, and where they are coming from.

All this data will guide brands in the prioritization, organization and creation of content for their page, which will lead to an improved experience that better suits fans’ interests and needs. More importantly, Google Analytics and DoubleClick reporting products will let advertisers tie paid media placements to page interaction, and help to optimize and maximize the value of media spend.

4. Google Can Learn from Facebook

Facebook pioneered one-on-one connections between a brand and its fans through social networking, and will continue to be valuable for inherently social brands like musicians and celebrities. But for less social industries such as insurance, health and, say, paper towels, Google+ provides a platform that is open to conversation and focuses on providing branded content and valuable information in one place.

Facebook’s successes and missteps offer invaluable lessons, giving Google second-mover advantage in creating a brand page based on brands’ need for more customization, a hub to aggregate content across the web, strong search presence and user-engagement data. However, if Google+ brand pages turn out to be a replica of Facebook’s, the battle could be over before it’s begun.

Millions of websites use XFBML to render social plugins. We wanted to share some best practices that can improve the performance of these on your websites. Specifically, we offer custom
channelUrl
and asynchronous loading which, when used, will improve load times and reduce other issues such as double-counting of referral traffic from Facebook.

The custom channel URL is an optional parameter in the
FB.init
function called
channelUrl
. When you initialize the JavaScript library, add the
channelUrl
parameter in the FB.init function:

<div id="fb-root"></div>
<script src="//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js"></script>
<script>
  FB.init({
   appId : 'YOUR APP ID',
   status: true, // check login status
   cookie: true, // enable cookies to allow server to access session,
   xfbml: true, // enable XFBML and social plugins
   oauth: true, // enable OAuth 2.0
   channelUrl: 'http://www.yourdomain.com/channel.html' //custom channel
  });
</script>

The
channelUrl
points to a file that you add to your local directory which helps improve communication speed in some older browsers. Without the
channelUrl
, we are forced to use workarounds such as loading a second copy of the webpage in a hidden iframe to properly load social plugins. The workarounds increase load times and inflate referral traffic from Facebook.

To create a channel.html file, add the following line to the file (located at http://www.yourdomain.com/channel.html):

<script src="//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js"></script>

If you have the ability to run PHP, we strongly advise setting a long cache for the
channelUrl
file to ensure optimal performance. Here is a sample PHP script that accomplishes this:

<?php
$cache_expire = 60*60*24*365;
header("Pragma: public");
header("Cache-Control: maxage=".$cache_expire);
header('Expires: '.gmdate('D, d M Y H:i:s', time()+$cache_expire).' GMT');
?>

<script src="//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js"></script>

In this case, you should also set the
channelUrl
file to the fully qualified URL such as http://www.yourdomain.com/channel.php.

In our testing, adding a custom
channelUrl
improves the performance in Internet Explorer and therefore its inclusion is advised for all of our developers. Internet Explorer yields statistically significant performance gains when including the parameter, where the load time of a test website with 5 XFBML plugins improves from 1.10 seconds to 0.43 seconds.

Asynchronous loading is another simple tactic that allows your page to load quickly without blocking the loading of other elements of your page. Upon successful loading of the JS SDK, we call the
window.fbAsyncInit
function. All front-end functions that depend on Facebook API calls should be separated and called via
window.fbAsyncInit
. This ensures that the Facebook features are loaded in a non-blocking fashion and will speed up its rendering, which has positive SEO benefits. When designing your social features, you should approach it with this mentality to start.

For example:

<html xmlns:fb="https://www.facebook.com/2008/fbml">
<body>
<div id="fb-root"></div>
<script>
/* All Facebook functions should be included
   in this function, or at least initiated from here */
window.fbAsyncInit = function() {
  FB.init({appId: 'your app id',
       status: true,
       cookie: true,
 	   xfbml: true});

  FB.api('/me', function(response) {
   console.log(response.name);
  });
};
(function() {
  var e = document.createElement('script'); e.async = true;
  e.src = document.location.protocol +
   '//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js';
  document.getElementById('fb-root').appendChild(e);
}());
</script>
</body>
<html>

We’ve updated our documentation to reflect the importance of these options and changed the default sample code to include a
channelUrl
. We are continuing to update our docs as part of Operation Developer Love as well as share more best practices via “How-To” blog posts. Check out the rest of the collection here.

Ever since Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook profile was hacked, Facebook has been pushing users toward using secure browsing via SSL. While only a small number of users have made the switch so far, Facebook will be requiring it in the next couple of months.

Now that we have rolled out banner ads on our My Info and Welcome Tab applications (to page admins only, not to viewers of the pages), we have a few cents a day coming in to help us pay the annual fee for an SSL certificate. So we are now supporting SSL throughout all of our Facebook applications. This means My Greetings, My Places, and My Status also have full SSL support.

This means you can turn on Facebook’s secure browsing preference and seamlessly use our Facebook apps without having to switch out of secure mode. While none of our apps send any sensitive data, it was annoying to our users to have to switch back and forth between secure and unsecured modes.

Hey, did you hear? Google has a new social network!

It’s called Google Plus, and it’s kind of a big deal. At least, that’s what we’re being told. Over, and over, and over. Yep, Google Plus is the best thing since Facebook. In fact, it’s better than Facebook. And it’s better than Twitter. In fact, Google Plus is going to be the death of them both!

Poppycock. Not only is Google Plus one of the biggest examples of style-over-substance and over-hype that the Internet has seen, it will be prove to be absolutely no threat to the dominance of Facebook and Twitter within their respective niches.

And while there are some aspects of Google Plus that are fairly innovative (and have made it attractive to early adopters), other parts of the platform have been so poorly thought out and executed that it begs belief. Other highly-celebrated features flatter to deceive, whilst being all-but-ignored by those clapping the loudest.

The Hype

Google Plus has certainly arrived with considerable fanfare. Using the same approach that made Gmail so desirable, Google Plus launched as invite-only, with the platform open only to a lucky few. This wasn’t entirely random – Google was careful to pre-invite many thought leaders, bloggers and pundits in the tech space (particularly in Silicon Valley), as they were always going to have a lot to say. And say it loudly.

This created an early demand that probably hasn’t been matched in internet history. The Wall Street Journal reported that in just three weeks, Google+ has had 20 million unique visitors since its launch. Even Mark Zuckerberg signed up, quickly becoming the most-followed user on the network.

Of course, visitors isn’t the same thing as users, and users isn’t the same thing as active users. So how many people have signed up for Google+? Using a surname-based analysis system, Ancestor.com founder and statistician Paul Allen pegged the membership at 10 million on July 7, a feat achieved in just 16 days. As a comparison, it took Twitter 780 days and Facebook 852 days to reach the 10 million user mark.

I mean, look at this growth – insane!

Since then, Allen estimates that Google Plus is up to 18 million to 20 million users, all achieved in about three weeks. No wonder Zuck has signed up – he’ll have nowhere else to go at this rate.

The Reality

Google Plus seems exciting now because it’s new and shiny and lots of major tech players are giving it a decent amount of attention. But it’s deceptive, and underneath very little is actually going on.

Google Plus’ 20 million signups in such a small period of time certainly seems impressive. But this is Google, a well-established search giant that already boasts over a billion users. Couple that with the must-scratch-itch that is invite-only, and you have an influx that was both predictable and self-fulfilling.

But it’s not as good as it looks. For the week ending July 19, 2011, Experian Hitwise says that Google Plus had some 1.8 million visits. That number was up 283 percent from the previous week, but relatively it’s tiny, both compared to Facebook and Twitter, but also to the number of registered profiles on Google Plus.

If Google Plus actually has 20 million signups, that means that on any given day of that week only a fraction over a quarter of a million bothered to come back. That’s about 1.3 percent. Even if you assume there are only 10 million registered users, that’s still only 2.6 percent. It’s actually less than that, as number of those visits are from brand-new users.

Either way, it’s hardly a healthy stat for long-term growth. And anecdotally I’ve seen a lot of evidence of this myself. I’ve invited dozens and dozens of my friends to Google+, and of those who have bothered to sign up (probably less than half), the vast majority — easily 90% — have registered, had a quick look round and then promptly departed, never to return. The question I’m hearing again and again is: I already have Facebook and/or Twitter, so why do I need this?

The thing is, if you register on Google+ and follow a portion of the most-followed users — people like Danny Sullivan, Robert Scoble, Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose and Steve Rubel — you’ll start to believe that Google+ is the most popular thing, like, ever. Look at all those posts. More impressive, look at all those comments. Such engagement!

But it’s an illusion. These guys come with a ready-made audience, most of whom follow them pretty much anywhere. Google+ is the best thing that ever happened to them. This isn’t a criticism — they all produce first-class content. But just because they’re seeing a lot of reactions and getting a great response to their posts doesn’t mean everybody else is. In fact, virtually nobody else is. Try visiting the Google+ profiles of many of the people commenting in these guys’ posts. With a few exceptions, it’s a ghost town.

And Mark Zuckerberg racking up at least 350,000 followers isn’t proof of anything. Zuck could show up at MySpace and have 350,000 followers by the end of the day.

And let’s not forget that Google Plus had the help of Facebook and Twitter to generate all of this publicity. I don’t think we can credit this enough. A combined billion users (give or take some crossover) went completely nuts about Google Plus, with some 1.9 million tweets, 107,000 blog posts, 30,000 online news articles and 153,000 forum posts made about Google+ in the first two weeks of its launch. But this isn’t proof of success, as the vast majority of these people didn’t even have invites to the platform. It’s proof of hype, but also proof of the power of Facebook and Twitter, both of whom didn’t have the same help when they first opened their doors.

When it launched, Twitter had a little bit of help from Facebook. And Facebook had a little bit of help from MySpace, because it was so decidedly awful.

(Also, it’s worth observing that even with all this fuss, mentions of Google Plus were dwarfed by mentions of Facebook and Twitter over that same period.)

People have very short memories. When the much-derided Google Buzz opened it generated 9 million posts in the first 56 hours. It’s Google. These kinds of launches are inevitable. It doesn’t mean anything.

Where Google Got Social Right

Hangouts

Hangouts, the Google Plus live video chat, are proving very popular with a lot of users (although typically only when launched by somebody well-established and/or downright famous). Because Hangouts support multiple users, Google has one-upped Facebook’s one-on-one Skype integration, although it can’t be long until that also supports group video chat.

The User Interface

Google Plus looks great. So clean and minimalist, it totally reminds me of FriendFeed (more on that later).

Where Google Got Social Wrong (Again)

How about everywhere else?

Circles

This is being touted as Google Plus’ killer feature, as circles allow anyone to digitally organize their friends, as proposed by Paul Adam in his much-loved presentation, The Real Life Social Network. It’s so easy – simply drag and drop a friend into the circle of your choice. You can then click on any circle in your sidebar to see just content from those users. Even better, you can send your own content to any circle of your choice. Talk about targeted marketing!

The thing is: this is broken. Circles sound like a good idea on paper but in reality they don’t work. Why? Two main reasons. One, because people cannot digitally organize their friends by interest. And two, even if you could nobody talks about that same interest constantly and nothing else. In other words, a given person cannot be defined by something they like. Certainly not just that.

I’ll give you an example: Danny Sullivan. Danny is head of Search Engine Land and produces a ton of outstanding content about that space. I follow Danny on Google Plus, and filed him away in the appropriate circle. But the problem is that Danny doesn’t just talk about search engines. He also shares a lot of photos of sunsets and beaches and stuff like that. Which is fine – he can write about what he wants. Which, of course, is the crux of the issue. I could file Danny over multiple circles (search, tech, photos, sunsets, and so on) or I could keep him filed under one, but none of them are going to be accurate, because Danny Sullivan is not a robot, blindly mass-producing content about a finite number of subjects. He’s a person, and people aren’t easily pigeonholed.

This is an ongoing issue. Not only is the circle filing system likely to be inaccurate, but to make it even remotely useful you have to keep modifying and revising your circles as you start to follow new people and existing followers prove themselves to be somebody else.

Bottom line: most people won’t bother. They’ll just start to file everybody under one big circle, and put it up with it. And that’s exactly what will happen when you group too many people into one circle, especially if they’re pundits or self-promoters – the circle becomes unusable, almost instantly. A veritable nightmare of ramblings and noise.

This is the problem when you don’t have a character limit on status updates. Twitter has 140, Facebook has 420, and Google+ has no limit, at least not one that I’ve seen reached. Some of the updates are so long that they fill up multiple screens. Seriously: who wants that? Who signed up to see that? If I wanted to see every word of every article you’ve written I’d visit your blog. And cherry pick.

That’s the problem with circles as an input measure. For output, they’re even worse. Google thought they were being really smart by letting us, as individuals, decide who goes where, and then broadcasting to them accordingly. But as a system it simply does work, because of the reasons I’ve already outlined: I don’t know what you like. And you don’t know what I like. You might think you do, and Google might even be able to provide you with an algorithmic guesstimate that’s pretty accurate at this moment right now, but come tomorrow things will have changed. Come next week and next month and they’ll have changed completely. I’m not all about Twitter, and I’m not all about social media. I don’t want to see everything ever written about those things. I don’t see no ring on this finger. You don’t own me!

As you can see the way the output part of circles has been defined is backward. I shouldn’t be tagging you by your interests – you should be tagging yourself based on your own interests. You know what you like. Nobody else does. And you know that tomorrow you might not like that thing anymore. But I’ll still think your its biggest fan, blinding pushing my now-irritating content your way 24/7. Right up until you unfollow me. Hooray! Everybody wins.

If Google had set up circles so people tagged themselves, it could be a world-beater. I’d set up a Circle called Twitter, and other people would opt into it, ike a mailing list, circa 2011. Visit my profile, check out my different circles of topics, and sign up for what you want. That’s a winning content delivery system. And it will work because users choose what they want to see, rather than the broadcaster picking for them. Moreover, I could quickly see which of my circles was the most popular, and focus my efforts on that.

To me, the biggest proof that circles don’t work is the way that the Google Plus superstars like Scoble, Rubel and Sullivan are using them. Namely, they don’t. They post everything they do public. And why wouldn’t they? Who wants less people to see their content? It’s fundamentally opposed to everything we’ve ever been taught. Sure, targeted marketing certainly has its place, but only when people opt-in. Not the other way around.

And let’s remember that Facebook has had this feature forever, except over there it’s called Groups. And nobody uses it. Why would it be any different on Google?

Sparks

Are you having a laugh, Google?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a fundamentally useless, bolted-on-at-the-last-minute worthless piece of crap.

Search

The Google Plus search feature is… non-existent. You can find people and you can search via sparks (so sweet), but that’s it.

I mean: this is Google, right? Who thought leaving out a search box was a good idea?

Brand Profiles

Google Plus didn’t launch with brand profiles, promising to add them later, and announced that they only wanted real people to make profiles. Specifically: no non-humans (which I have to say I welcome). Google warned users that they’d remove any brand profiles that were set up. And on July 21, that’s exactly what they did, much to the chagrin of those involved. All except for Mashable, whose excess of 100,000 followers was saved and renamed as founder Pete Cashmore. All the other accounts – which included some major players such as Coca Cola and Good Morning America – were nuked. Talk about one rule for one.

The Scoble Effect

I’ve touched upon this a couple of times in this post but it needs more explanation. Basically, Robert Scoble ruins everything. He’s the Jack Nicklaus of social networks, because when you factor in what he’s done and doing compared to everybody else, it all falls apart. There is no comparison. He’s out there, alone, like Jonah versus the whale.

This isn’t me knocking the guy. I like him. Scoble is the early adopter personified, and gives every new major social network 100 percent of his attention. He follows bazillions of other users and seems to read everything they all post. He also generates a lot of his own content, all of which gets a bazillion comments.

So what happens is if you want Robert Scoble in your network, you are basically saying: I do not want to use this network. In fact, I want it ruined. This was true on FriendFeed, it was true on Google Buzz and it’s even truer on Google Plus. It isn’t an issue on Twitter because of the strict character limit. But when anything goes, then it’s game over. As I said, Scoble ruins everything. He even acknowledges this himself. It’s the litmus test of every new social platform.

But it’s not just Robert who breaks Google Plus. It’s all the other power users, too. Because Google Plus has relatively no controls over content, if you add more than a couple of these guys to your stream then Google Plus becomes essentially unusable. With their continuous updates and pages and pages of comments, they drown out everybody else so much that it’s both impressive and completely infuriating. Don’t worry – very soon you won’t care, because you’ll have stopped using Google+.

FriendFeed Again

To me, Google Plus is basically FriendFeed all over again. Bigger platform, and beefed-up, sure, but it’s essentially the same tech crowd (almost exactly), each of whom are showing the same enthusiasm, which delivers the same hype, which ultimately produces the same lack of returning users, simply because very few of them care about the same things to the same degree.

On that initial visit, Google Plus is just as overwhelming for most people as Friendfeed was. (And I liked FriendFeed, but it was never going to appeal to non-technical folk.) It doesn’t have the simplicity of Twitter and it doesn’t have the familiarity (and comfort) of Facebook. Instead, it sits somewhere between the two, satisfying neither one user nor the other, and ultimately appealing to neither.

Why Google Plus Is No Threat To Facebook

The people who are most active about the threat posed by Facebook, or what it is that they don’t like about the platform, are often the same people mentioned in this article. That is, early adopters, tech pundits, web entrepreneurs, journalists and high-profile bloggers. But cool as a lot of these guys are, they aren’t normal people. They aren’t the majority. They aren’t the hundreds of millions of people who use Facebook to chat with friends and family, and to play games. There’s fundamentally no reason whatsoever for these same people to leave Facebook and move over to Google Plus. Even if Google Plus copies Facebook exactly there’s no reason, as they already have what they need on Facebook.

Yep, it’s certainly true that nothing lasts forever – MySpace and AOL are the best (and increasingly cliched) examples of that. But at 750 million users plus, Facebook isn’t going away anytime soon. And Google Plus isn’t enough of a temptation to make any significant dent in that user base.

Why Google Plus Is No Threat To Twitter

People who want Twitter – that is, the majority of users, not the loudest users — want it because of what it is: a short, quick messaging service that, if one follows the right profiles (and ‘right’ is of course a very relative term — what’s right for you?) provides an easy (and powerful) way to position yourself right on the edge of the information curve.

Those same short updates also works brilliantly on most mobile phones, making Twitter very addictive.

If Google Plus has any appeal to the man in the street, it’s for vastly different reasons than why they’re using Twitter.

Google Plus As A Blogging Platform

Because there aren’t any limits to content updates, GooglePlus does work as a blogging system, and it could become a viable alternative to WordPress, Tumblr and Posterous for bloggers.

We’ve already seen some evidence of this with people like Kevin Rose and Bill Gross pointing their personal web domains directly at their Google profiles. Of course, they can reverse this any time they like, but it could be a trend of things to come, and it will be interesting to see if Google+ begins to take some share away from the established blogging platforms.

The Big Question

Google Plus could top 100 might users with little or no effort – because it’s Google. The key thing is what it takes to get the platform to the next level in social networking: The much-desired billion users. So let’s ask this question again: why would the average person leave Facebook for Google Plus, when it’s mostly the same and what’s different is a bit of a mess? Why on earth would they leave Twitter, when they’re a complete apple and oranges comparison?

Why do they have to leave at all? Surely there’s room on the block for another major social network – can’t we all just get along? So here’s what I think is the biggest question: Can people really cope with the work it takes to successfully manage three social networks?

More importantly, will they?

Because if they can’t, or won’t, it doesn’t matter what Google Plus does, what features it introduces and what fixes it makes to those already on the system. Because, relatively at first, and later in actuality, almost nobody will be paying attention.

This month’s hot topic has been, without a doubt, Google+. Whether the new social service from the world’s largest search company will be a “Facebook killer” remains to be seen, but one thing’s for certain: This is one social network you don’t want to ignore.

When it comes to getting found, Google+ is fast becoming a great asset for bloggers and content producers thanks to its ever-expanding user base and simple sharing tools. In this post, we’ll show you a few ways to start spreading a little of that Google+ love on your WordPress-powered website.

Display Your Google+ Profile Information

Software developer John Henson from PlusDevs has developed a handy, easy to use WordPress widget that displays your Google+ profile on your blog. The setup is quick and simple: Install the plug-in and drag the widget into your sidebar. Just fill out the form and you’re done.

You can also incorporate the widget into your template with only a few lines of PHP code, giving you the flexibility to place it anywhere within your layout.

You can learn more about the widget in the official blog post or jump straight to the code on GitHub.

Unofficial Google+ user tracking site SocialStatistics.com also offers an embeddable Google+ widget. Simply add your profile to their database and grab the widget code from your page on their site.

Add the +1 Button

If you’re not already using the Google +1 button, consider taking a moment to add it to your site. This is a great way to let users save, promote and find their favorite content. The +1 button only takes a few minutes to integrate with your site and works with any Google profile. While this isn’t a Google+ specific feature, we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it integrated with the service. Either way, it’s another great way of adding an additional avenue for promotion and sharing.

You can learn more about the +1 button from Google.

To add it to your WordPress site, you can either use the official +1 button code generator from Google or take a look at the myriad +1 button WordPress plug-ins available.

Use a Google+ Inspired Theme

Do you love the look of Google+’s clean, intuitive layout and unobtrusive interface? For the die-hard fan (or, hey, maybe you run a blog that’s centered around the service), there are already a few Google+ inspired WordPress themes for your perusal.

WP Plus

WP Plus is a fixed-width, 3 column Google+ inspred WordPress theme supporting custom content menus, styled sticky-posts and valid XHTML/CSS code. Clean, fast-loading and SEO optimized, WP Plus gives your blog the Google+ look and feel in just minutes.

PlusOne

Similar to WP Plus, PlusOne is another 3-column, fixed-width Google+ styled theme that supports custom WordPress menus. It’s a clean and well-designed theme, but it does take some liberties with how it translates Google+ to WordPress (so it doesn’t look quite as accurate to Google’s own design).

Reflex+

Reflex+ shares all of the features mentioned in the above two theme but it also brings in jQuery and incorporates AJAX for some tasks, such as the “read more” post navigation, helping it appear more fluid and seamless.

Want More?

Google+ is still a relatively new service locked behind an invite-only registration system. No doubt as time progresses and the service grows, there will be more options for publishers. Right now there are a couple of options if you’re a developer interested in having a go at creating your own Google+ plug-in.

If you’d like to gain access to the official Google+ API, you’ll need to sign up with Google to register interest in a Google+ developer account. Unfortunately, the API is not yet public. It’s unclear whether this will change as the service matures, but inquiring about developer access is certainly worth looking into if you want serious Google+ integration and sharing between your site and the service.

For a more portable (and presumably trimmed-down) solution, software developer Jason Striegel has put together a collection of PHP utilities for a locally-hosted Google+ API service. In its current state, the API will allow you to retrieve post and profile data and post to Google+. You can check out his code on GitHub. This is a great option to include within your own distributed code, such as WordPress plug-ins and widgets.

There is more than one way to share a Facebook status. Avoid the mundane and try something new with our top 10 tips and tricks. Learn how to tag friends, add symbols and toggle the language options. Use apps to add a dislike button or schedule status updates. The possibilities are endless. Find out how to build a better Facebook status below.

1. Tag Others In Your Status Update

Type “@” before someone or something’s name in the status bar. An auto-generated drop-down list of those in your social circle starting with that letter will appear. It works with people, pages, events, brands and companies. Click the name you want, finish the update and hit share. The name becomes a hyperlink and the status shows up on that person’s wall, too.

2. Hide Status Updates From Certain People

On the other side of the coin, you can control who can read your status updates with Facebook’s privacy settings. Click on the padlock next to the “share” button and you can select whether your status update can be seen by everyone, friends of friends, or only friends. Or you can customize it with specific friend lists or individual people, which can be useful for work, special interest groups or if you’re planning a surprise party.

3. Add Symbols

Facebook chat allows for emoticons like the well-known yellow smiley but the status bar does not. The only symbol you can make with shortcut keys is a heart by typing in <3. Instead, you can copy and past universal symbols or Windows users can input various alt + number combinations on a numerical keypad (it doesn’t work on the top row of numbers).

4. Change Your Language

Facebook is offered in many different languages but did you know you can change your Facebook display to “pirate” or upside down English? Pirate makes your status your “plank,” where you can share or “blabber t’ yer mates.” What you type in the status bar won’t become pirate or turn upside down with these options. Just the display will change.

5. Add A Dislike Button

You can’t go anywhere now without seeing a “like” button, but apps like Status Magic can add some more variety to what you think of statuses. You can add a “dislike” button or other emotions such as “disagree,” “love,” “hate” or “LOLs” to any status updates posted with the app.

6. Schedule Status Updates

Social media services like TweetDeck, HootSuite, SocialOomph, Sendible and Later Bro offer a free way to schedule your status updates. Each one is a little different but all require you to sign in with Facebook Connect. Just select your time zone, type your status, set the time of when you want to post and you’re ready.

7. See Worldwide Status Updates

OpenBook allows you to see Facebook status updates of users from around the world, by collecting posts from those whose privacy levels are set to everyone. You can search by gender and keywords on a given topic.

8. Check Your Stats

Status Statistics lets you know how many times you have updated your Facebook status and much, much more. It analyzes your updates and provides a list of how many statuses you have written, the average word count and how many times per day you post. It creates a graph to show what time and what days you normally update and allows you to search for old statuses without having to scroll down your history.

9. Turn Your Status Updates Into A Word Cloud

Status Analyzer 3D takes your status updates and makes a word cloud. It generates a list of words you commonly used and creates a colorful visual.

10. Update Through Firefox

FireStatus allows you to update your status among other features for multiple social networks like Facebook through a Firefox extension. It displays updates from the social networks through notification pop-ups on your desktop.

Readers, do you or will you use any of these tips and tricks?
